So, how’s June been treating you?
I was getting my drafts together for a series though out the summer on why reading makes you a better writer. I had the next three months all set, and ready to work on.
You know that feeling when everything is going great, then something happens that fucks you up?
My husband woke me up around 3am on June 6th:
Your mom called me. She called you and left a voicemail. She took your sister to the emergency room.
And that began my month of June.
This post is the first time I’ve written in over two weeks. I had to drop everything. My routine of waking up early? Gone. Instead, it was replaced with shuttling back and forth between the hospital and my mom’s house. A whole week, my sister was in the hospital, eventually getting her gallbladder removed. She was in so much pain because gall stones were stuck in her bile duct and gave her pancreatitis. Like, she could have died. That’s a fucking scary thought.
(I apologize for the swearing. It won’t happen again.)
Luckily, surgery went well, and even though her last week of school got pushed back, she’s doing well and craving orange soda. 🙂
And yet, just when I started to buckle down and get a schedule started up AGAIN, my husband woke me in the middle of the night. Again.
This time, he was the one going to the ER, with me driving and not falling asleep. He had a tension headache, probably being worried with his mom being in the hospital with pneumonia last week. Stress is bad, y’all. He got some medicine, and we went home later that night.
It’s near the end of June. I didn’t write anything at all until this post.
Usually, I’d get all bent out shape for not staying on top of my schedule, not squeezing in time to write. But, I didn’t. I couldn’t. I brought my laptop to the hospital the day my sister was having surgery, only to spend time in the waiting room watching random stuff on the television and eating chocolates with my mom. Life told me to stop writing. And I did.
I didn’t worry about it at all. And neither should you.
Life will get in your way sometimes. It will get in the way all at once when it does. Usually if you’re writing and in a groove, a small thing happening doesn’t get you down, like if you were late for a doctor’s appointment and had to reschedule. You’d jump back into writing, probably about trying to stop missing doctor’s appointments.
No, life stops you dead in your tracks with a series of catastrophes that make you think of everything else BUT writing. I’m here to tell you that it’s okay.
I know I’m about creating writing habits, and how important they are, but when people you love are in trouble, you have permission to throw writing to the side and give 100% to them. It’s okay to break down and cry. Eat a boatload of junk food. Mindlessly watch television.
But don’t try to write. Life will stop you.
And when life says it’s okay to get back into it, you pull yourself up, and start writing again. Which is what I did in this post.
So, don’t worry about writing today. It’ll be there when you get back.
